The Institute of Animal Pathology (ITPA) invites applications for a full-time position in its diagnostic and teaching unit


We are a dynamic and growing institute and would like to extend our team by an enthusiastic pathologist who enjoys working in a vibrant and rapidly developing academic setting. Assignment of duties is expected to be appr. 70% service and teaching and 30% research activity but are flexible, depending upon the candidate's interests and qualifications. Service will be divided between biopsy and necropsy duties. We are currently extending our necropsy service in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Medicine and our Ruminant and Porcine clinics and are developing strategies to foster veterinary diagnostic work and research in farm animal pathology. Our biopsy service is internationally recognized for its expertise in dermatopathology and the successful candidate will contribute to this high level of diagnostic work. Teaching encompasses supervision of pathology residents and veterinary students during their rotations in our diagnostic services plus classroom teaching in the veterinary curriculum.

The ITPA has a strong focus on research and we expect that the successful candidate integrates into one of the existing research groups working on therapy escape or host-pathogen interaction at our institute. This position is a full-time, 6 years, non-tenure-track appointment and is available from November 1, 2017. The University of Bern offers internationally competitive and attractive salaries which are commensurate with experience and qualifications. We encourage experienced pathologists as well as young pathologists who have recently completed their training to apply. Experienced mentors will support younger candidates in developing their academic career.

The following qualifications are required:

  • a DVM or equivalent degree
  • ECVP / ACVP board certification or eligibility
  • experience and independence in diagnostic veterinary pathology
  • excellent communication/interpersonal skills
  • a strong understanding for student's and resident's needs and dedication towards teaching
  • a collaborative mindset to foster our team approach in diagnostics, teaching and research
  • enthusiasm about developing the field of veterinary pathology
  • minimal level of German at the start (B1) and fluency in this language (C1) after 12 months

A PhD degree and fluency in French is not mandatory but an additional benefit.

Bern is located in the heart of the Swiss midlands and offers exceptional cultural and outdoor activities. The Jurassic mountains, the Alps, the Lake District and the French part of Switzerland for example are all easily accessible within less than 1 hour and our staff and students enjoy living and working in this beautiful area.
